From Proto-Semitic *tam(a)r. Cognate with Hebrew תָּמָר‏ (tāmār), Aramaic תמרא (tamarā), Classical Syriac ܬܡܰܪܬܳܐ (tɘmartā), Mehri تومر, whereas Ge'ez ተምር (tämr) is “probably from Arabic” (Leslau).
