تَهَجَّدَ (tahajjada) V, non-past يَتَهَجَّدُ‎ (yatahajjadu)

  1. to sleep in the night, or in the latter part of the night
  2. to stay up at night, to be awake nocturnally
  3. (Islam) to perform prayer in the night
    • 7th century CE, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 2:60:
      كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ إِذَا قَامَ لِيَتَهَجَّدَ يَشُوصُ فَاهُ بِالسِّوَاكِ‏.‏
      kāna rasūlu l-lahi ʔiḏā qāma li-yatahajjada yašūṣu fā-hu bi-s-siwāki.
      The Prophet, when he stood up for nightly prayer, brushed his teeth with a stick from the toothbrush tree.
