    Afr x(ə)låy, otherwise x(u)dāy, m. 'God'; prosodically monosyllabic. — LW < early Prs xuẟāy. (For -l- < -- cf. also jəlā 'separate'. When the -u- was syncopated, xlāy became the recognised early metrical form. At a later date most dialects adopted -d- < Prs and the word became bisyllabic; but prosodically the word continued to be felt as monosyllabic. [I have heard the pronunciation xdāy, too.]
