- to trace one's origin to
- (Islam) to narrate (a ḥadīth) using the preposition عَنْ (ʕan, “on the authority of”)
- حَدِيثٌ مُعَنْعَنٌ ― ḥadīṯun muʕanʕanun ― a ḥadīth muʿanʿan, i.e. a ḥadīth narrated using the preposition عَنْ (ʕan, “on the authority of”)
- to pronounce the ء (ʔ) like ع (ʕ), in such manner as to pronounce عَنْ (ʕan) instead of أَنْ (ʔan), which is said to have been characteristic of the Tamīm (تَمِيم) tribe
