Etymology[edit]

The meanings “to stay, to bide” of the Arabic root ع د ن (ʕ-d-n) appear to be denominal from the due date and spatial meanings of عِدَّان (ʕiddān), to be separated from the significations of “striking sharply”, hence “to manure”, “mine; metal”.
