Persian
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]From Middle Persian mwck' (mōzag, “shoe”), from *hmáwčati (“to clothe”). Compare Middle Persian (Pazend) [Avestan needed] (mōža, “stocking, boot”), Parthian (Book Pahlavi) mwck' (mōžag), Baluchi [script needed] (mōzag, mōžaġ, “boot, legging”), Pashto موزه (mōza, “stocking, boot, covering for the legs, long boot”), as well as the Iranian borrowings — Old Armenian մուճակ (mučak), Arabic موزج (mawzaj), Byzantine Greek μουζάκιον (mouzákion, “boots”), μουζακίτζης (mouzakítzēs, “short boots?”), family names or nicknames Μουζάκιος (Mouzákios), Μουζάκης (Mouzákēs), the last four possibly via Armenian.
