From Middle Persian 𐭯𐭠𐭩𐭩𐭭 (pʾyyn /⁠pāyēn⁠/); by surface analysis, پا (, foot) +‎ ـین (-in, -ên, adjectival suffix, -en), literally "of the foot".[1]
