[edit]Uncertain. Perhaps inherited from Prakrit 𑀧𑀸𑀮𑀁𑀩 (pālaṃba, “neck ornament; long”), from Sanskrit प्रालम्ब (prālamba).
According to a folk etymology, a blend of پَانِی (pānī) + عَالَم ('ālam).[1]
