From پا (, foot) + پوش (puš), present stem of پوشیدن (pušidan, to cover), so literally “foot-cover”. Compare Armenian պաճուճ (pačuč), Georgian ფაფუცი (papuci), ფაფუჭი (papuč̣i), ფაჩუჩი (pačuči), Iranian borrowings.
