From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (wls /wars/, hair), from Proto-Iranian *wálśah, cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬯𐬀 (varəsa, hair (on the head)), Sogdian [script needed] (wrs /wars/, hair) and Northern Kurdish pirç (pirč, hair on the head); from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wálćas, cognate with Sanskrit वल्श (válśa, twig, sprout); from Proto-Indo-European *wólḱ-o-s, cognate with Proto-Slavic *volsъ (hair).
