Etymology[edit]

19th century borrowing from Arabic أُفُق (ʔufuq) as a substitute of ܐܘܪܝܙܘܢ (ʾōrīzōn) attested in Classical Syriac; compare also borrowed into Hebrew אֹפֶק (ófek).
