Etymology[edit]
From the older form *ܥܠܥܐ (ʿelʿā); unattested in Classical Syriac, from Proto-Semitic *ṣ́lʿ. Compare Arabic ضِلْع (ḍilʕ) and Hebrew צֶלַע (ṣélaʿ).
