Dissimilated from older Aramaic *ܓܫܓܝܫܬܐ(gašgīštā), from the root ܓ-ܫ-ܓ-ܫ(ɡ-š-ɡ-š), related to feeling; compare Mishnaic Hebrew גַּרְגֵּשׁ(gargēš).
