Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac, with the latter senses a noun of place coined from ܘܲܥܕܵܐ (waˁdā, appointed time, promise, pledge); compare Arabic مَوْعِد (mawʕid) and Hebrew מוֹעֵד (mo'éd).
