From the root ܨ-ܠ-ܒ (IPA(key): /sˁ-l-b/) related to crucifying. Compare Arabic صَلِيب (ṣalīb) and Hebrew צְלָב (ṣəlāḇ). Compare Persian چلیپا (čalipâ, cross).
