Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀅𑀁𑀟𑀬 (aṃḍaya) (with Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-)) (compare Old Marathi 𑘀𑘽𑘚𑘕 (aṃḍaja, “egg-born”)), from Sanskrit अण्ड (aṇḍá), आण्ड (āṇḍá), or अण्डक (aṇḍaka). Compare Konkani अंडें (aṇḍẽ), Gujarati ઈંડું (ī̃ḍũ), Hindustani اَنْڈَا (anḍā) / अंडा (aṇḍā), Sindhi آنو / आनो, Punjabi ਆਂਡਾ (āṇḍā), Nepali अण्डा (aṇḍā), Bengali আণ্ডা (anḍa), এণ্ডা (enḍa).
