Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hangúštʰas (thumb, big toe), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eng- (joint). Cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬧𐬔𐬎𐬱𐬙𐬀 (aṇgušta), Middle Persian ʾngwst' (angust) (whence Persian انگشت (angošt)). Also related to अङ्गुरि (aṅguri), अङ्गुलि (aṅguli), अङ्ग (aṅga).
