From Proto-Indo-Aryan *HásHr̥, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *HásHr̥, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ésh₂r̥ (blood). Cognate with Hittite 𒂊𒌍𒄯 (ēšḫar), Ancient Greek ἔαρ (éar), Old Armenian արիւն (ariwn) and perhaps Latin sanguis.

      bhūmyā asurasṛgātmā kva svitko vidvāṃsamupa gātpraṣṭumetat .
      Who hath beheld him as he sprang to being, seen how the boneless One supports the bony?
      Where is the blood of earth, the life, the spirit? Who may approach the man who knows, to ask it?
    • c. 700 CE – 900 CE, Bhāgavata Purāṇa 7.12.25:
      खे खानि वायौ निश्वासांस्तेजःसूष्माणमात्मवान्। अप्स्व्असृक्श्लेष्मपूयानि क्षितौ शेषं यथोद्भ‍वम्॥
      khe khāni vāyau niśvāsāṃstejaḥsūṣmāṇamātmavān. apsvasṛkśleṣmapūyāni kṣitau śeṣaṃ yathodbha‍vam.
      A sober, self-realized person who has full knowledge should merge the various parts of the body in their original sources. The holes in the body are caused by the sky, the process of breathing is caused by the air, the heat of the body is caused by fire, and semen, blood and mucus are caused by water. The hard substances, like skin, muscle and bone, are caused by earth. In this way all the constituents of the body are caused by various elements, and they should be merged again into those elements.

      मच्छूलभिन्नग्रीवस्य भूरिणा रुधिरेण वै। असृक्प्रियं तर्पयिष्ये भ्रातरं मे गतव्यथः॥
      macchūlabhinnagrīvasya bhūriṇā rudhireṇa vai. asṛkpriyaṃ tarpayiṣye bhrātaraṃ me gatavyathaḥ.
      I shall therefore sever Lord Viṣṇu’s head from his trunk by my trident, and with the profuse rudhira [blood] from his body I shall please my brother Hiraṇyākṣa, who was so fond of sucking asṛk [blood]. Thus shall I too be peaceful.

      इत्युक्त्वा भगवाञ्छाल्वं गदया भीमवेगया। तताड जत्रौ संरब्धः स चकम्पे वमन्न्असृक्
      ityuktvā bhagavāñchālvaṃ gadayā bhīmavegayā. tatāḍa jatrau saṃrabdhaḥ sa cakampe vamannasṛk.
      Having said this, the furious Lord swung his club with frightening power and speed and hit Śālva on the collarbone, making him tremble and vomit blood.

      tadā diteḥ samabhavatsahasā hṛdi vepathuḥ. smarantyā bharturādeśaṃ stanāccāsṛk prasusruve.
      At that very moment, a shudder suddenly ran through the heart of Diti, the mother of Hiraṇyākṣa. She recalled the words of her husband, Kaśyapa, and blood flowed from her breasts.
