Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀅𑀟𑁆𑀟 (*aḍḍa), borrowed from Dravidian (compare Tamil அடை (aṭai, “to obstruct”)). Cognate with Gujarati આડી (āḍī, “obstacle”), Assamese আঁৰ (ãr, “screen”).
