Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *uktíṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *uktíš, from Proto-Indo-European *ukʷtís, from the root *wekʷ- (“to speak”). By surface analysis, वच् (vac) + -ति (-ti). Compare Avestan 𐬎𐬑𐬙𐬌 (uxti, “word, speech”), 𐬎𐬑𐬙𐬀 (uxta, “said, spoken”), Old Armenian ուխտ (uxt, “vow”).
