[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *udáram, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *udáras, from Proto-Indo-European *úderos (“belly”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬎𐬛𐬀𐬭𐬋𐬚𐬭𐬄𐬯𐬀 (udarōθrąsa, “snake creeping on the belly”), Latin uterus.
