Etymology

Inherited from Old Marathi खांब (khāṃba), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀔𑀁𑀪 (khaṃbha), from Sanskrit स्कम्भ (skambhá, pillar; support; prop), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *skambʰás. Cognate with Gujarati ખંભ (khambh, pillar), ખંભો (khambho, pillar), Nepali खम्बा (khambā, pillar; pole), खामो (khāmo, pillar; post; stake; prop) and possibly Tibetan ཀ་བ (ka ba).
