[edit]Inherited from Old Marathi खांब (khāṃba), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀔𑀁𑀪 (khaṃbha), from Sanskrit स्कम्भ (skambhá, “pillar; support; prop”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *skambʰás. Cognate with Gujarati ખંભ (khambh, “pillar”), ખંભો (khambho, “pillar”), Nepali खम्बा (khambā, “pillar; pole”), खामो (khāmo, “pillar; post; stake; prop”) and possibly Tibetan ཀ་བ (ka ba).
