Inherited from Prakrit 𑀘𑀁𑀤𑀺𑀆 (caṃdiā), from Sanskrit चन्द्रिका (candrikā).[1][2] By surface analysis, चाँद (cā̃d, “moon”) + -ई (-ī). Doublet of चंद्रिका (candrikā). Cognate with Punjabi ਚਾਂਦੀ (cāndī) / چاندی (cāndī), Gujarati ચાંદી (cā̃dī), Marathi चांदी (cāndī), Sindhi چانديِ / चांदी, Bengali চাঁদি (cãdi).
