    Inherited from Prakrit 𑀘𑀁𑀤 (caṃda), from Sanskrit च॒न्द्र (candrá), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ćandrás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čandrás, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kend-.

    Cognate with Sanskrit श्चन्द्र (ścandrá, shining, radiant), Ancient Greek κάνδαρος (kándaros, charcoal), Latin candeō, Old Armenian խանդ (xand). Doublet of चंद्र (candra).
