Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ćiṣṭás (message) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-). Compare Punjabi ਚਿੱਟ (ciṭṭa) / چِٹّ(ciṭṭ), Nepali चिठी (ciṭhī), Gujarati ચિઠ્ઠી (ciṭhṭhī), Marathi चिठ्ठी (ciṭhṭhī), Bengali চিঠি (ciṭhi), Assamese চিঠি (sithi).

Turner suggested tying it to Proto-Iranian *čayš- (to teach, make known), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čayš-, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷeys- (to observe). Compare Younger Avestan 𐬗𐬌𐬥𐬀𐬯𐬙𐬌(cinasti).[1]
