Etymology

Derived from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀘𑀉𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀝𑁆𑀞𑀻 (caükkaṭṭhī, doorframe) or a related term (with possible metathesis of the aspiration), from Sanskrit *चतुष्काष्ठ (catuṣkāṣṭha, rectangular frame), from चतुर् (catur, four) +‎ काष्ठ (kāṣṭha, wood, timber). Compare Gujarati ચોકઠું (cokṭhũ), Marathi चौकट (caukaṭ), Punjabi ਚੁਗਾਠ (cugāṭh) / چُگاٹھ (cugāṭh), ਚੌਖਟ (caukhaṭ) / چَوکھٹ (caukhṭ), ਚੌਖਟਾ (caukhṭā) / چَوکھٹا (caukhṭā), Nepali चौखुट (caukhuṭ), Maithili चौकठि (caukᵊṭhɨ) / 𑒔𑒾𑒏𑒜𑒱 (caukaḍhi), Odia ଚୌକାଠ (caukāṭha), Bengali চৌকাঠ (cōukaṭh), Assamese চৌকাঠ (soukath).
