Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘕𑘰𑘪𑘰𑘃 (jāvāī), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀚𑀸𑀫𑀸𑀉𑀅 (jāmāua) (with Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-)), from Sanskrit जामातृ (jā́mātṛ), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ā́mātā, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵem- (to marry). Cognate with Konkani जांवंय (jāuvaiya), Gujarati જમાઈ (jamāī), Hindi जमाई (jamāī), Odia ଜ୍ୱାଇଁ (jwāĩ), Nepali ज्वाइँ (jwāĩ).
