Etymology[edit]

From Sanskrit द्विप्रहर (dviprahara), from द्वि (dvi) +‎ प्रहर (prahara)[1]. Synchronically analyzable as दु- (du-) +‎ पार (pār)[2][3]. Related to Old Marathi 𑘟𑘳𑘢𑘰𑘮𑘰𑘨𑘲 (dupāhārī) / 𑘟𑘳𑘢𑘰𑘮𑘰𑘨𑘳 (dupāhāru). Compare Hindi दोपहर (dophar), Gujarati બપોર (bapor), Punjabi ਦੁਪਹਿਰ (duphir), Oriya ଦିପହର (dipôhôrô), Bengali দুপুর (dupur).
