From Proto-Indo-Aryan *barźʰáyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *barȷ́ʰáyati, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰorǵʰ-éye-ti, from *bʰerǵʰ- (“to rise”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬠𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬀𐬧𐬝 (bərəzaṇt̰), Latin fortis, Old English burg (whence English borough).
