Etymology 1

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀩𑁄𑀳𑀡 (bohaṇa), from Sanskrit बोधन (bodhana, waking, awakening), from the root बुध् (budh).[1][2]

However, some trace it to other (and less likely) origins:
