From Maharastri Prakrit 𑀪𑀡𑀇 (bhaṇaï), from Sanskrit भनति (bhanati), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂- (to speak, say). Cognate with Marathi म्हणणे (mhaṇṇe), Gujarati ભણવું (bhaṇvũ), Nepali भन्नु (bhannu).
