Etymology
[edit]Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *lóypos (“adhesive, glue, something smeared”), from the root *leyp- (“to stick, adhere to, smear; fatty substance”). Cognate with Proto-Slavic *lě̑pъ, Lithuanian lipai̇̃ (“glue”), Ancient Greek λίπος (lípos, “fat”).
