Post-Vedic verb, possibly a backformation from forms like future वक्ष्यति (vakṣyáti), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wekʷ- (to speak). Cognate with Russian вякать (vjakatʹ), Latin vōx, Old Irish focul.
