Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *wáHyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wáHyati, from Proto-Indo-European *wéh₁y-e-ti, from *weh₁y- (to weave). Cognate with Latin vieō (to twist, plait, weave), Russian вить (vitʹ, to wind, twist, weave).
