From Proto-Indo-Aryan *wástay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wástay, from Proto-Indo-European *wes- (to dress). Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬯𐬙𐬉‎ (vastē‎), 𐬬𐬀𐬢𐬵𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌‎ (vaŋhaiti‎), Ancient Greek ἕννυμι (hénnumi), ἐνδύομαι (endúomai), Tocharian B wäs-, Latin vestis, Albanian vesh, Old English werian (whence English wear).
