Etymology[edit]

From Sanskrit स्वप्न (svápna), from Proto-Indo-European *swépnos, *súpnos (dream), which both are derived from Proto-Indo-European *swep-. Cognates include Latin somnus, Ancient Greek ὕπνος (húpnos) and Old English swefn (English sweven).
