From Proto-Indo-Iranian *saptá, from Proto-Indo-European *septḿ̥. Cognates include Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬞𐬙𐬀 (hapta), Old Church Slavonic седмь (sedmĭ), Latvian septiņi, Latin septem, Sanskrit ἑπτά (hepta), and Old English seofon (English seven).
