Inherited from Sanskrit हदति (hádati), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *źʰádati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰádati, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéd-e-ti, from *ǵʰed- (to defecate). Cognate with Konkani हाग्चे (hāgce), Gujarati હગવું (hagvũ), Hindi हगना (hagnā), Sindhi هَنگَڻُ / हंगणु (haṅgaṇu), Punjabi ਹੱਗਣਾ (haggaṇā) / ہگّنا (hggnā), Bengali হাগা (haga), Assamese হগা (hoga), Sylheti ꠀꠉꠣ (aga).
