[edit]Borrowed from Classical Persian هند (hind), from Middle Persian hnd (hind), from Old Persian 𐏃𐎡𐎯𐎢𐏁 (hindūš), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sindʰus (“river”) or from Sanskrit सिन्धु (sindhu, “a river, stream”). Doublet of सिंध (sindh).
