Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *źʰáwmas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰáwmas, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéw-mo-s, from *ǵʰew- (“to pour”). Cognate with Ancient Greek χεῦμᾰ (kheûmă, “that which is poured”), χέω (khéō), Phrygian ζευμάν (zeumán). By surface analysis, from the root हु (hu, “to offer, sacrifice”) + -म (-ma).
