Etymology[edit]

From Sanskrit इष्टका (iṣṭakā), from Proto-Indo-European *yes- (foam; boil). Cognate with Oriya ଇଟା (iṭa), Bengali ইট (iṭ), Hindustani اینٹ‎ / ईंट (īṇṭ), Avestan 𐬌𐬱𐬙𐬌𐬌𐬀(ištiia, brick), Persian خشت(xešt, brick), Hittite 𒅖𒈾𒀸 (išnāš, dough) and Tocharian B iścem (clay).
