Inherited from Early Assamese চান্দ (cando), from Sanskrit চন্দ্ৰ (candra), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kand-. Cognate with Sylheti ꠌꠣꠘ꠆ꠖ (sand), Rohingya san, Bengali চাঁদ (cãd), Hindustani چاند / चांद (cānd).

Doublet of চন্দ্ৰ (sondro).
