Etymology

Inherited from Old Bengali জে (je), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀚𑁂 (je), from Sanskrit যঃ (yaḥ, “who”, nom. mas. sg. relative pronoun). The expected reflex of Prakrit je in Old Bengali should be *ji, so the e-vowel could be by the same extension as in সে (śe) (or by analogy to it or এ (e)).

The modern spelling in য- is by analogy to the Sanskrit etymon.
