From Early Assamese স্বপন (sbopono), borrowed from Sanskrit স্ৱপ্ন (svápna), from Proto-Indo-European *swépnos, *supnós (dream), which both are derived from Proto-Indo-European *swep-. Cognates include Kamta সপোন (xopün) / ṣopön, Latin somnus, Ancient Greek ὕπνος (húpnos) and Old English swefn (English sweven).
