Punjabi[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Sanskrit आत्मन (ātmana). Compare Marathi आपण (āpaṇ). Doublet of ਆਪ (āpa).

Pronunciation[edit]

Pronoun[edit]

ਆਪਾਂ (āpā̃) (Shahmukhi spelling آپاں)

  1. (dialectal) we: inclusive first-person plural personal pronoun

Usage notes[edit]

Used in some Punjabi dialects, mainly in India, but also in some dialects of Pakistan - which indicates an inclusive plural personal pronoun, ie. 'we'. In standard Punjabi, the common term is ਅਸੀਂ (asī̃) / اَسِیں (asīṉ), which does not indicate inclusivity or exclusivity.
