Etymology

Borrowed from Classical Persian صِفْر (sifr), from Arabic صِفْر (ṣifr), itself calqued from Sanskrit शून्य (śūnya, void, nothingness). Cognate of Hindi सिफ़र (sifar) and English zero. Compare related ਸੁੰਞ (sũñ) and ਸੁੰਨ (sunn).
