Inherited from Old Gujarati चालइ (cālaï), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀘𑀮𑀤𑀺 (caladi), from Sanskrit चलति (calati), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *čálHati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čálHati, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷél-e-ti, from *kʷel- (to move; to turn (around)). Cognate with Bengali চলা (cola), Hindi चलना (calnā), Marathi चालणे (ċālṇe), Marwari चालणो (cālṇo), Punjabi ਚੱਲਣਾ (callaṇā).
