Cognate with Northern Thai ᨸᩪ᩵, Lao ປູ່ (pū), Lü ᦔᦴᧈ (ṗuu¹), Tai Dam ꪜꪴ꪿, Shan ပူႇ (pùu), Tai Nüa ᥙᥧᥱ (pǔ), Ahom 𑜆𑜥 (pū), Bouyei baus, Zhuang baeuq (dialectal), Nong Zhuang buq, Zuojiang Zhuang buq.
Compare Proto-Hlai *pʰuːʔ (“grandfather; ancestor”), Proto-Austronesian *apu (“grandparent; grandchild”) (whence Hiligaynon apo, Tagalog apo).
