Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Inscription of Wat Si Chum (จารึกวัดศรีชุม), c. 1341-1367. Possibly borrowed from Middle Khmer សហាយ (sahāya), from Sanskrit सहाय (sahāya, friend; follower).
