Pronunciation
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]Probably analyzed as *सह-अय (*saha-aya, “one who goes with”), from सह (saha, “companion”) + अय (aya, “going”); for a similar formation, compare सहायन (sahā-yana, “going together, fellowship”). An alternate derivation from a Prakrit form of सखाय (sakhāya) (for which see सखि (sakhi, “friend”) for more) is less likely.[1]
Noun
[edit]सहा-य • (sahā-ya) stem, m
- "one who goes along with (another)", a companion, follower, adherent, ally, assistant, helper in or to (locative or compound)
- (at the end of a compound) "having as a companion or assistant, accompanied or supported by"
- (ibc.) companionship, assistance
- name of Shiva
- ruddy goose
- a kind of drug or perfume
